Why Protection Doesn't Work for Empaths (And What to Do Instead)

Excerpt from the book The Happy Empath: Learn To Love Being Sensitive by Barbara Buck

If you've spent any time in spiritual circles, you've probably been told that as an empath, you need to protect yourself.
Maybe you've been taught to imagine a white light surrounding your body. Perhaps you've carried crystals in your pocket, called on Archangel Michael, burned sage after being around difficult people, or visualized an energetic shield around yourself before leaving the house.
I've done many of those things myself, many times, for many, many years.
I want to begin by saying that I have tremendous respect for the spiritual community. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of knowing thousands of healers, intuitives, and empaths. Most people who teach protection techniques do so from a place of love and genuine desire to help others. Many of these practices can feel comforting, grounding, and supportive, and sometimes they actually work.
But over the years, I began asking myself a question that changed everything:
If these protection techniques are the answer, why are so many empaths still overwhelmed? Often, the very people who teach others how to work with their own intuition, including empathic abilities, come to me for help with their own.
That question led me down a very different path.
You're Not Too “Open”
When people discover they're empathic, one of the first things they hear is that they're absorbing everyone else's negative energy and taking it on as their own. In all honesty, they probably are. Naturally, according to many teachings, the next step becomes learning how to protect themselves from doing that because they are too “open” to the energy of others.
The advice usually sounds something like this:
Picture yourself inside a bubble of white light.
Imagine wearing energetic armor.
Carry a black tourmaline crystal.
Take an Epsom salt bath after being around people.
Burn sage to clear your energy.
Visualize a golden egg surrounding your body to shield it and keep negative energy out.
While these practices may help you feel calmer, they don't necessarily solve the deeper issue.
In my experience, many empaths are struggling because they haven't yet learned how to stay connected to themselves. They aren’t in their bodies, and their minds are often so worried about other people or their pets that they don’t even know where they stop and other people begin.
Simply put, the energy, emotions, and thoughts of the people around them supersedes their own. No wonder they aren't fully in their bodies half the time. It’s rough in there!
When Protection Becomes a Way of Giving Away Your Power
If I believe that every person, every room, every conversation, and every crowded store have the power to overwhelm me unless I perform a protection ritual first, what am I really telling myself?
Perhaps I'm telling myself that the world is more powerful than I am. Without realizing it, I place my sense of safety outside myself. My peace depends on my crystal. My calm depends on my visualization. My balance depends on whether I remembered to shield myself that morning.
Over time, this mindset can quietly reinforce the belief that we're fragile and that we're constantly at the mercy of other people's emotions and energy.
That isn't empowerment.
It's fear wearing spiritual clothing.
Protection Has Its Place
Please don't misunderstand me. I don't believe protection practices are wrong.
Many of them are beautiful rituals that help us slow down, become present, and set a clear intention. I believe intention is incredibly powerful. If carrying a crystal reminds you to stay grounded or lighting sage helps you transition from one part of your day to another, those practices can absolutely be supportive.
It’s also important that we feel safe. If we feel like we’re drawing a healthy boundary by incorporating these practices into our daily life and they’re working, then by all means, keep doing them.
However, ask yourself if they are helping you remember your power, or if they’re replacing it.
There's an important difference.
The Real Work Is Learning Who You Are
I believe the greatest protection an empath can develop is a strong sense of self. Many empaths spend their entire lives becoming experts on everyone else. We know when someone is upset before they say a word, we notice subtle shifts in mood, and sense tension the moment we walk into a room.
We become so skilled at reading other people that we forget to know ourselves.
We become so focused on everyone else's energy that we lose touch with our own.
Who Are Empaths Without Everyone Else?
One exercise I often use asks people to complete a series of "I am" statements. Recently, someone wrote:
I am a mother.
I am a wife.
I am overweight.
I am a cancer survivor.
I am aging.
I am kind.
Most of those statements reflected something she had experienced, accomplished, or how she related to other people and not about who she is.
Then I asked the same question to a very empathic seven-year-old girl.
She answered:
"I am light."
"I am pretty."
"I am natural."
"I am happy."
"I am a fast runner."
"I am me."
When I asked why she believed she was pretty, she smiled and said, "I just look in the mirror and see me. A boy at school called me ugly, but he is stupid." She wasn't waiting for someone else to tell her who she was, and she wasn’t allowing someone else’s energy to define her. She was born knowing herself and that was the end of it.
That is the kind of self-connection every empath deserves to rediscover.
Claim Your Mental Space
Healthy boundaries don't begin with imagining a wall between you and everyone else. They begin with knowing where you end and another person begins. When you're deeply connected to yourself, something remarkable happens.
You start recognizing what belongs to you and what doesn't. You notice when someone else's anxiety is brushing against your nervous system instead of automatically carrying it. You can remain compassionate without becoming consumed. You stop asking, "How do I keep everyone's energy out?"
Instead, you begin asking, "What is true for me at this moment?"
That simple shift changes everything.
What to Do Instead
Instead of spending all of your energy trying to protect yourself from the world, begin strengthening your relationship with yourself in body, mind, and spirit.
Ask yourself throughout the day:
What am I feeling right now?
Is this emotion mine?
How does my body feel and what does it need?
What do I know to be true?
How is my energy today?
The more familiar you become with your own thoughts, emotions, values, and energy, the easier it becomes to recognize when something doesn't belong to you. Self-awareness becomes your greatest form of discernment, which is far more empowering than fear-based protection.
Don't Protect Your Energetic Space, Claim It
If you enjoy playing with energy and visualizing shields as protection, I suggest you use energy immersion instead of creating a bubble or wall around yourself. Imagine a beautiful ball of gold light in the center of your chest and let it grow and grow until it fills you up with light. Allow it to fill up your entire energy field within your body and aura. Visualize it permeating every cell, every fiber, and every particle of your being.
Say “This body and energy are mine and I claim them as my own.”
This is your light that shines within you and what you are made of. It supersedes anyone else’s energy you may be feeling because it IS you. Everyone has their own unique energetic frequency. This is yours. You may feel other people’s stuff, their emotional or physical frequencies that they emit, but you don’t have to let them change your own.
If I gave you a hug right now, when we parted, we would still have all of our body parts. I know where I stop physically and you begin, even though we are both made up of quantum particles of light and information. The human energy field is the same.
You Are More Powerful Than You Think
Being an empath doesn't mean you're destined to spend your life exhausted by other people's emotions. It doesn't mean you need to hide from crowds, avoid difficult people, or constantly defend yourself against unseen energies. It’s not a weakness.
It's one of your greatest gifts.
The goal is to become so deeply rooted in yourself that you can walk through the world without losing who you are. That's the kind of protection no ritual can give you. It comes from remembering your own light, trusting your inner wisdom, and reclaiming the power that has always been yours.
If you're ready to stop fearing your empathic abilities and start living with greater peace, confidence, and self-trust, I'd be honored to support you on your journey.
